The 2026 NASPA Institute transformed my approach, moving me from a functional manager to an executive leader ready for VPSA roles. The Institute confirmed that I have what it takes to pursue VPSA roles with confidence. A key takeaway was the need for nuance when navigating the political landscapes of different institutions, from large public research universities to small private colleges and community colleges. Faculty emphasized how the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) role changes depending on whether the position reports to the President or the Provost.
Central to my growth was the realization that my effectiveness is rooted in authenticity. My leadership is rooted in authenticity; my experiences, values, and story shape every decision and will guide strategy at the VPSA level. Rather than conforming to a rigid executive mold, I am committed to leveraging my own leadership framework; my identity will guide strategy, decisions, and culture.
The Institute focused on “readiness” and offered an empowering look at 2026 demographic trends, including the reality of shorter presidential tenures. The data reinforced the VPSA’s role as an institutional anchor, maintaining stability through frequent leadership changes. To build that resilience, I will focus on strategic visibility and on being present where my voice adds value without stifling student expression. Students will always be at the center of my work. With them in mind, I will translate student needs into measurable priorities such as retention rates, student satisfaction, and ROI, to secure senior leadership support.
Finally, I am committed to modeling work‑life harmony for my team, acknowledging the unpredictable demands of student affairs while maintaining healthy boundaries. I am especially grateful to our faculty—Karu Kozuma, Charlotte Johnson, Cedric Howard, Cynthia Hernandez, John Mark Day, Kathryn Kay Coquemont, and Tyson Beale—for their radical transparency. Their willingness to share the realities of the VPSA role gave me the community and support necessary to thrive in a position that is as rewarding as it can be isolating at times. I look forward to continuing with my amazing cohort peers. I leave with sharpened competencies and a vital network of peers and mentors as I explore the VPSA role. I welcome conversations with colleagues and mentors as I further explore this next step.
